The Data Governance Council is responsible for maintaining and enforcing data governance at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The effort focuses on student academic data (as housed in the admissions systems and in Banner), with the eventual goal of expanding the governance program to include additional university data.
The council’s objectives include establishing standard data definitions, overseeing data quality standards, and providing guidance on internal and external reporting. The group works collaboratively with key stakeholders across various departments, units, and divisions to develop policies and procedures to ensure that data are managed consistently and effectively.
The council also fosters a culture of data literacy across the institution, ensuring that all members of the campus community have access to data appropriate to their roles at the university, and that available data are accurate, timely, and authoritative.
Institutional Research and Strategic Analysis, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of Innovative Technologies partnered to develop the Data Governance Council.
